Who Can Apply for the eVisitor (Subclass 651) Visa?

The eVisitor (Subclass 651) visa is available for travelers from 36 eligible countries, as outlined by Australia’s Department of Immigration.

If you’re a citizen of one of the 36 eligible countries, you can easily apply for the eVisitor Subclass 651 visa online.

The Australian government offers two main types of eVisitor visas:

Australia Tourist eVisitor Visa

This visa (Subclass 651) is for individuals from eligible countries who wish to visit Australia for tourism or to visit family and friends.

If you’re taking a round-trip cruise, you’ll need this visa. Keep in mind that time spent on the cruise counts toward your stay in Australia, so it won’t extend your visa.

Australia Business eVisitor Visa

This visa (Subclass 651) is designed for those visiting Australia for business purposes. It’s ideal for individuals attending meetings, exploring business opportunities, or participating in conferences or trade fairs.

With this visa, you can:

  • Make general business inquiries or discuss employment opportunities.

  • Review or sign business contracts.

  • Participate in official government visits.

  • Attend conferences or trade fairs (without receiving payment).

You can also engage in short-term study or training for up to three months. If you wish to study or train for a longer period, you’ll need to apply for a different visa.

ETA Visa for Australia

The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) functions similarly to the eVisitor Visa, allowing travelers to visit Australia with ease.

Citizens from the following countries can apply for the ETA online:

With an approved ETA, travelers can:

  • Visit Australia for tourism or leisure.

  • Visit friends or family residing in Australia.

  • Attend trade shows, conferences, and similar events.

  • Travel to Australia for business purposes.

  • Enter Australian waters by boat.

  • Volunteer in Australia (as long as the work is not unpaid).

Documents Needed for an eVisitor Visa Application

To apply for the eVisitor Visa from eligible countries, you will need:

  • A valid passport (at least six months validity)

  • An active email address

  • A credit/debit card to pay the visa fee

The eVisitor Visa has fewer requirements than a standard tourist visa, making the application process faster and more straightforward.

How to Apply for an eVisitor Visa

To apply for the eVisitor (Subclass 651) visa, you must be outside Australia.

You can complete the application from anywhere, eliminating the need for visits to an embassy or consulate. The Quick 3-step process makes it easy to prepare for your trip to Australia.

Important Note:

If your Australian visa application is denied, you have the option to appeal through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). When reapplying, make sure to disclose any previous visa rejections.

Note that visa extensions are not allowed. If you wish to stay longer, you must leave Australia and apply for a new visa.

If you’re transiting through Australia, you will need a Transit Visa (Subclass 771), which allows a stay of up to 72 hours, even if you’re remaining at the airport.

Requirements for Entering Australia

To enter Australia, you’ll need to present key travel documents to the Australian Border Force (ABF) officer.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Document For Travel to Australia (DFTTA) or ImmiCard: The DFTTA allows you to travel to Australia and will list your visa type on the left side. If you’re an immigrant or refugee, your ImmiCard serves as a secure form of identification.

  • Incoming Passenger Card: You must complete this form upon arrival in Australia. It asks for personal information, travel details, and whether you are carrying any restricted items. Accurate completion helps ensure a smooth entry process and avoids delays.

  • Passport: Your passport serves as proof of your identity and nationality. Refugees can use a ‘titre de voyage’, issued under the UN Refugee Convention, to travel internationally and return to their home country.

  • COVID-19 Regulations: As of now, you do not need to provide a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or a negative PCR test. However, regulations can change, so it’s a good idea to verify requirements a few days before your trip.
