If you hold two passports, planning a trip to Australia gets a little tricky. Which passport do you use to apply? Which one do you show at the airport? What happens if you mix them up?
At Apply Australia Visa, this is one of the most common questions we get from travelers. The short answer is simple: pick one eligible passport, apply with it, and travel with it. The details below will help you do that without trouble.
First, Does Your Passport Qualify?
The Australia eVisitor visa (subclass 651) is made for short tourism and business trips. It is open to passport holders from a set list of European countries. It is not open to every passport in the world.
So the first question for a dual citizen is not “which passport do I like better?” It is “which of my passports is actually eligible?”
Here are the three most common situations:
1. One passport is eligible, the other is not.
This is the easy one. Use the eligible European passport for the eVisitor application. For example, someone with an Irish passport and a passport from a country outside the eVisitor list should apply with the Irish one. You can read more on our pages for Irish citizens, French citizens and German citizens. If you hold a British passport, see our UK citizens guide.
2. Both passports are eligible.
You have a choice, but you must make it once and stick to it. A traveler with, say, Italian and Swiss passports can use either. Just do not apply with one and fly with the other.
3. One passport is Australian.
Australian citizens do not apply for a visitor visa. If you are a dual citizen with an Australian passport, you should enter Australia on that passport. Our guide on dual citizenship in Australia explains the background.
The Golden Rule: One Visa, One Passport
An eVisitor visa is not stored on a sticker in your passport. It is linked electronically to the passport number you entered in your application.
That means the airline, and later the border officer, will look up the passport you present. If the number does not match the one on your visa record, the system may show no visa at all. The result can be a denied boarding at check-in, which is a very bad way to start a holiday.
Here is a real-world pattern we see. A traveler applies using their European passport because it is eligible. At the airport, they hand over their other passport because it is newer or easier to find in their bag. The check-in agent cannot find a visa and the traveler panics. The visa was fine. The wrong passport was on the counter.
Which Passport Should You Pick When Both Are Eligible?
Use this quick checklist:
- Validity: Choose the passport with more time left. Do not go for one that expires soon after your trip.
- Name match: Pick the passport whose name matches your flight ticket exactly.
- Condition: Avoid a damaged or worn passport. Border staff can refuse it.
- Simplicity: If you will leave and re-enter the same country several times, choose the one you will carry on every flight in your plan.
Once you decide, write the passport number on your trip notes so you can double check it before you submit anything.
How to Apply Step by Step
- Gather the passport you chose, a working email address, and your travel plan.
- Start your Australia eVisitor visa application and enter the details exactly as they appear on that passport.
- Check every character in the passport number, name and date of birth before you submit.
- Wait for confirmation and read the email carefully.
- Save a copy of the confirmation and keep it with the passport you used.

Common Mistakes Dual Citizens Make
Applying with one passport and flying with another. This is the big one. It causes more problems than any other error.
Booking the flight under a different name. Some dual citizens have slightly different name spellings on each passport, such as a middle name or a hyphen. Book your ticket using the name on the passport tied to your visa.
Renewing a passport mid-way. If you renew the passport you used after getting your visa, the number changes. Your visa record will not match the new passport. Always check this before you travel and talk to us if it applies to you.
Assuming the second passport is a backup. It is not. Your visa only works with the passport used in the application.
Forgetting the rules of your other country. Some countries expect their citizens to enter and leave on their own passport. You can carry both, but show the right one to the right authority. When you check in for the flight to Australia, show the passport linked to your visa.
Not reading the visa conditions. The eVisitor lets you visit for short stays, and it is meant for tourism or short business visits. It is not for work or long study. If you are unsure how long to plan, our guide on how long to spend in Australia can help.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply with both of my passports?
No. Choose one eligible passport and use it for the application and for travel.
What if I applied with the wrong passport?
Contact us before you travel. It is much easier to fix a problem before you are at the airport.
Do I need to tell anyone I am a dual citizen?
You only need to give the details of the passport you use in the application. Just make sure everything you enter is correct and matches that passport.
Can I enter Australia using a passport that is not on the visa?
It is not a good idea. The system checks the passport you show, so use the one linked to your visa.
Is the eVisitor the same as other Australian visas?
No. See our overview of the Australia eVisitor visa and our FAQ for more.
